Benjamin was the last of the two sons of Jacob and Rachel. His name means son of the strong person. His father changed his name from Benoni, which meant child of my pain, given by a dying mother. Charlie Garret says that as a ravening wolf, it is ” bent on its mission, and completely determined in its purpose”. That described the future of this tribe. The fact that this wolf works from morning till evening, speaks of their untiring efforts and their courage. Perhaps this is best illustrated at the time of the Judges when a few Benjamites fought against and defeated the 400,000 strong army of his brothers. Later when they were defeated, they still had the opportunity to steal women of other tribes as spoils of war (Judges 20-21). Some outstanding (characters of this tribe include: King Saul, Johnathan, Ehud, Jeremiah,Mordecai, Esther and in new the testament, Paul, the apostle. He was the youngest, but God saw within him a fighter. Out of this tribe came the New testament crusader, the apostle of grace, Paul. The tribe is mentioned in the apocalypse as those who will be granted salvation. His blessings point to work of Christ who tears and heals( Garret- Hosea 6:1-3). You may be at the bottom, but you don’t have to die there. Christ was born in a manger, but he became the risen lord. You too can change.
