Filial Piety

Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. Exodus 20:12 KJV

Filial Piety is described in Brittannica as the attitude of obedience, devotion and care towards one’s parents and elder family members. It is more pronounced in Chinese society with its root in Confucianism. It is their belief that honouring ones parents is the most important act of respect. This has led to the elevation of ancestor worship. In Christian practice, the family as the basic unit of society is expected to be in harmony for the society to function well. That requires honour and respect to parents ( Deut.5:16 ). There’s an attached blessing of long life to parental honour. In the new testament, Christ rebuked the Pharisees for abandoning parental respect and care( Mat.15:5-6 ). Honouring parents is meant to curb deep seated selfishness of modern society. Selfishness is the very root of suffering in life. Ironically this moral is present in almost all religions of the world. In Eph.6:1-2, the instruction is again emphasised. Rebellious children have lost a sense of love , submission, discipline and self control that would enable them to get parental blessings. This subject has been a course of several theses and dissertations. While the academic exercises continue, you owe God, your heavenly father obedience and submission to His will. What will be your reaction today?
