And Gideon said unto God, If thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said, Behold, I will put a fleece of wool in the floor; and if the dew be on the fleece only, and it be dry upon all the earth beside, then shall I know that thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said.
Judges 6:36-37 KJV
We were taught that Gideon wanted to be sure that God was with him. A careful reading reveals a different narrative of this story. My attention to a different narrative came from statements from Karelynne Ayayo. ” Gideon isn’t confused about his mission. He doesn’t lack discernment or direction. The problem is he doesn’t personally know the Lord or trust his character”. I had to pause for a deep reflection. Isnt this the same thing we do when we do not trust God or his word? Gods word is: Yea and Amen. Gideon doesn’t appear to have confidence that God will not deflect from what he has said. So he had to pass God through his personal scrutiny. God obliged him for his benefit. When we do not trust Gods word, we make a mockery of His faithfulness. We tend to reduce God to a simple human. Someone said,” In the same way, when we don’t trust God’s Word, his character, or his plan, we’ll be prone to sin and its various consequences”. That sin is the sin of idolatry. We have to learn to trust Gods word when He speaks to us. What has God said to you? It may take a little time. Trust him for it. God is ever faithful.
