On the Matters Of Baal-Peor
Baal was a local diety worshipped by the Moabites, located in the region of Peor. Peor means opening, and very suggestive of what the devil did here. The enemy failed to curse them, now it is using a different strategy to compromise them. The devil is a very crafty animal. It is willing to wait a long while to get you at unguarded moments. Its not until you read Numbers 31:16 that you will know that Balaam did not just leave at the end of chapter 24. He had seen money, so he had to find a way of earning it. Balak knew his prophecies responded to money. ” Behold, these caused the children of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to commit trespass against the Lord in the matter of Peor, and there was a plague among the congregation of the Lord”. When I read chapter 25, I just reacted, ” Not again! ” Isn’t that what we do? Sometimes we do it on a daily basis. We keep repeating the same old thing we should have conquered. These things make us vulnerable to the enemy. One writer had this to say about the matter : ” Balaam knew that, if the Israelite men could be seduced into idol worship, that God Himself would curse them ”. Who is the enemy sending to seduce you into idol worship? What circumstances are demanding your compromise. Stand your ground and out the devil to shame.
