Today’s scripture calls our attention to a very important concept. Its the concept of belief. For the average reader, the question will be: If they believed why did they perish in the wilderness? There are different levels of belief. The word used to describe what happened to the people is the Hebrew,”aman”, which means to have an assurance. The people were assured that the display of Moses and Aaron will save them. This belief is different from the saving saving faith. Belief is described as an intellectual acceptance of facts. Its like believing that Usman Dan Fodio was a great warrior in Africa, but no one would be willing to put their faith in him. Many people, like those Israelites, have certain set of facts about God. They believed Moses’s deliverance, but they never really trusted that God will execute it well. In the New testament, its not just belief that saves. In fact, James 2:19 says even demons belief too, and they tremble. Demons don’t have saving faith. Belief is a mental agreement. Faith is a wholehearted commitment. In Mat.7:21-23,Jesus condemns some people who were active in service but had no personal relationship with him. They believed, but had no faith. Today may your initial belief be turned into a wholehearted commitment to Jesus.

The People Believed
And Aaron spake all the words which the Lord had spoken unto Moses, and did the signs in the sight of the people. And the people believed: and when they heard that the Lord had visited the children of Israel, and that he had looked upon their affliction, then they bowed their heads and worshipped.
