This drama is coming to a close soon. In an article on the ninth plague, Dr. Ligon Duncan suggests four things about the darkness. The first is that darkness is a sign of Gods judgement. ( Rev.16:10-11 ). Secondly, darkness is associated with Gods abandonment. God is light. Thirdly, the plague returned Egypt to a pre-creation condition. Is not this a way of saying: ”Im about to deconstruct and de- create the land?”. Finally this was judgement against Ra, the sun god of Egypt. For three days, Ra could not win. The darkness was so total, it could be felt. This is where Pharaoh threatened Moses: you shall see my face no more. That was death sentence. Pharaoh had no more opportunity to ask someone to mediate. He had talked himself to a corner. This judgement reminds one of the vial judgement in Rev.16:10, and the peoples refusal to repent. It also reminds one of the darkness that fell at the crucifixion, all for sin. Yet Israel had light in Goshen. There’s a light in your inside that can not be quenched by the devil. May the light show the difference between you and the world. Jesus is that light. In him, there is no darkness at all.

Thick Darkness in the Land
And Moses stretched forth his hand toward heaven; and there was a thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days: They saw not one another, neither rose any from his place for three days: but all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings.
