Presumption is described as, ” an idea that is taken to be true on the basis of probability ”. It is an audacious behaviour seen to be arrogant, disrespectful and transgressing beyond the limits of what is permitted or acceptable. Israel had gotten this far from Egypt, not from their strength but by Divine guidance. Now the people want to do things based on their feelings. Moses warned them that God was not with them. Presumption is an aspect of situation ethics which teaches that ethical decisions should not follow laid down rules or procedures. God is a God of principles. In this instance, God was not with them. He did not accompany them in the fight, and they suffered consequences. When the parents of Jesus assumed that Jesus was with them as they returned from the feast, they went back, searching for three days for Jesus. Presumption today believes that salvation can be gained without our response to the grace of God. Presumption is a sin that takes God for granted. Psam 19:13-14 is a prayer we should all pray so that God keeps us from presumptuous sin. Heb.10-26 talks about our sinning wilfully after salvation. Luke 12:47 talks about the servant who knew the masters will, but did not prepare himself for it. If we act presumptuously, we will suffer consequences. It is wisdom to seek the Masters will. Moses did not join them. They were discomfited. Theirs is our lesson. Get divine direction.
