Don’t Be Unequally Yoked

And Samson went down to Timnath, and saw a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines. And he came up, and told his father and his mother, and said, I have seen a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines: now therefore get her for me to wife. Judges 14:1‭-‬2 KJV

On May 31st, 2023, we shared on the victory song of Deborah. We mentioned how Israel constantly went whoring after the gods of the Canaanites tribes. We concluded that we must not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. That means you can’t date or marry someone who is not a child of God, no matter how cool they may appear. We quoted 2nd Cor.6:14-18 as a New Testament injunction on the matter. Today’s read expands this thought. Samson was a Judge, yet he went to marry a Philistine, contrary to Gods instructions in Deut.22:10 not to yoke different animals together. Unequally yoked relationship will not only cause pain, but as in the case of Samson, it may cause death. The verse itself is very instructive. Timnath was not only geographically down, it took Samson down. You can not build a home with different beliefs. There won’t be a unity of spirit. Candice Lucy quotes an author on this subject with the following words, ”It’s always important to ask ourselves — in every area of life — how a believer can have any kind of partnership with an unbeliever. This is particularly true in marriage. An unbeliever doesn’t follow the Lord […] so everything else in their life is an idol.” Samson chosed to disobey God, and paid with his life. What about you? In your business and relationships, are you equally yoked?
