My Life is Preserved
Peniel. And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.
Genesis 32:30 KJV
Naming by the people of old was like keeping a diary of important events. Jacob was famous for it. Gen. 28:19, Jacob changed Luz to Bethel. Joab had sent to David to enter Rabbah before he will name it after himself in 2 Sam. 12. Today, we are told that Jacob named the place of encounter Peniel, because he had seen Gods face, yet his life was spared. There is no need to raise the old argument whether it was an angel or God. This place is near Succoth on the east side of river Jordan. The event is the turning point in the tale. In story telling, we would say it leads the rising action into a falling action. It is a decisive moment change occurs. We all need Peniel in life. Until it happens the devil will think he’s in charge. All the while Jacob wanted to change Esau when the change happened to him. Victor Franklin says, ” when we are no longer able to change the situation, we are challenged to change ourselves. One encounter with God will change you forever. May today be that day for you. Let me warn you. Peniel can be very catastrophic. It will change you. Your dependence may be ”out of joint”, but your life will be preserved. Peniel.
