The phrase Covenant of salt appears two tines in the Old Testament. The first is our verse today which addresses Gods eternal Covenant with the Aaronic Priesthood. The other appears in 2nd Chron. 13:5, where King Abijah mentions that God had given the kingship of Israel to David and his children as a covenant of salt. Salt became an important commodity for perpetual covenants because it was a standard of payment for Roman soldiers. The word salary is formed from payment with salt. The commodity was also used I’m making covenants. It is still being practised in the Arabian nations. Here is how one scholar expresses it: ” In the ancient world, ingesting salt was a way to make an agreement legally binding. If two parties entered into an agreement, they would eat salt together in the presence of witnesses, in the New Testament, Jesus calls Christians, the salt of the earth( Mat.5:13 ). So every child of God literary walks on Covenant platforms. The entire Bible is structured on covenants. Olim Williams adds that, ” Modern Christians have entered into a covenant with God when they became believers. It is a perpetual agreement to preserve, purify and permeate the Gospel on earth.”. That is very strong. Today we need to be conscious of our covenant rights so the enemy doesn’t play with us.
